Does Vitamin D3 require vitamin K2?
One of the biggest things that people make claims about is that if you take high dose vitamin D you must take K2 along with it. That is not true. The evidence doesn’t support this as well. My 20 years of being in functional nutrition where we test people’s blood, it is in less than 3% of people that we see high vitamin D levels leading to their calcium levels going up. Which is the main concern that people have. And that’s all dietary related anyways. So you do not have to have vitamin D3 and K2 taken together. That does not mean that you can’t! If you want to take them together, go right ahead.
There’s a huge correlation between K2 and gut health. And adequate intake can be achieved through diet alone. Anything that is fermented, like fermented sauerkraut, will give you the K2 you need. It’s all about that balanced diet that everyone tells you so much about. K2 works synergistically with vitamin D, but the problem is people have told you that if you do not take the two together then you will get hypercalcemia. And that’s simply not true. Less than 3% of people will develop this from that.
So K2 grabs calcium and pulls it out of the bloodstream to help put it into your bones. One important role is that they manage calcium metabolism and assimilation into the bones. It prevents calcification of the muscles and arteries.
Vitamin D, Copper & Zinc
I’m a big fan of taking vitamin D and zinc together. A lot of times we’ll talk to our patients about adding some pink Himalayan salt to their diet which has tons of different minerals in them, including copper. Copper helps the body get a whole array of minerals that it needs. There’s no strong evidence that you should not take vitamin D by itself.
